what are the differances between navy eod and swcc?
pros and cons, not the obvious I know what they do as far as mission and job. I just do not know which one is suited for me, I'm kind of leaning towards eod (school is in fl and seems like more of a variety of billets, but really want to do swcc as well, (very limited billets)
First of all, I assume that you are a female, because of the picture and name; SB (Special Boat Operator aka. SWCC) Rating is closed to females. (I know that "assumption" is the mother of all *uck ups- learned that in EOD Schl).
In general, Swicks (that's what they are normally called) drive and work on varieties of Special Warfare crafts. They support SEALs and other Special Operations Command (SOCOM) Units during the maritime and riverine missions, and conduct unconventional small boat operations such as coastal/riverine patrols.
Navy EOD Techs (females are allowed) are normally work with explosives. They are the equivalent of Civilian's Bomb Squad. However, some Navy EOD Techs can be attached to other SOCOM Units as "Explosive Experts." And those technicians can do much more than just disfusing ordnances. However if you are a female, you will not be allowed to be attached to any of the "front line" units.
I cannot tell you which would be better for you, two different ratings, two, completely, different jobs. And I do not know you or your personality. Feel free to email me if you have more "specific" questions.
Just because EOD School is in FL, it doesn't mean that you will be stationed in FL. I do not think that there are any "Sea Duty" Billets for Navy EOD in FL.
Pros & Cons based on my own opinion as an EOD Tech.
Pros: more money than most other sailors (in Special Pays), get treated better than most other sailors, both ratings are pretty much opened, so you have a chance to make rank quicker (I made e-6 in about 6 yrs, then got stuck there until I got out 4 days ago).
Cons: limited billets, not a whole lot of time for social life, and I got stuck in Little Creek, VA for few years (absolutely HATED it).
Good luck.
