Can you get better performance by simply tuning your car?

Before buying my 2011 Subaru Impreza 2.5i I had done some reading on kbb.com and edmunds.com and saw several posts that people got significant performance increase by just "tuning" the engine. To what degree can I improve my cars performance without adding any serious modifications (no turbo)? If there isn't I can accept that and to be frank I'm not sure that what I read wasn't reffering to the WRX or STI. Thanks ahead of time.

Unless you're an engineer, leave it alone!

New cars come from the factory with optimal 'tuning' and you doing stuff to it will only void the warranty!
